How does one know that one is holy?

He stared me right in the face and asked:

“so you mean you could be holy for a whole day?”

So I can’t remember how we got to this question, but I remember reminiscing and arriving at:

“Nope, not possible”.

Then it hit me.

If God requires us to be holy, and if I can’t be holy, even for a day, then why am I a Christian again?

“who hath saved us and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, but is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel”. 2 Tim 1:9-10

This is an issue a lot of Christians fail to understand.
You do not work out salvation, it’s a free gift.
Does this mean we no longer need to be holy? of course not!

It’s true that we’ve been given the opportunity to become a part of God’s family, but just like every other family, or any group, there’s always an expected way of life. (culture)
Every man that was used by God had a weakness and failed in a thing or two, except Jesus.

God perceived that working out our own salvation wouldn’t lead us anywhere, so He sent His son to come and work it out for us.
The problem is, most of us do not see heaven’s culture as an attainable goal. This is probably normal, because you can only first be a part of a group, before you learn the culture of the group. I believe this is what the Church should be about; helping us get to our goal.

Anyway, what Jesus did on earth as man is proof that God’s expectation of holiness from us is possible, so now we have a focus, an example, a spokes person and High priest to speak on our behalf.
It’s like Jesus taking off our terrible garments and putting His flawless one on us and then showing us to His father like: Hey dad, look! this one is perfect.

So now it’s up to you to prove your interest in being a part of this family, because if you want to, you’ll begin to look and act a lot like your new big brother. Will you do awkward, terrible and weird things? yes, there would be a lot of cultural shocks, but you’ll have time to learn (Grace)
So yes I’m holy, because He is Holy!
